The cathedral located in the center of Granada was first built in the early 16th century at the request of Catholic Queen Isabella.
Previously, the cathedral used high-pressure sodium floodlights for illumination, which not only consumed high energy but also had poor lighting conditions, resulting in poor light quality and making it difficult to fully showcase the grandeur and delicate beauty of the cathedral. As time goes by, these lighting fixtures gradually age, maintenance costs continue to increase, and they also bring about light pollution problems to the surrounding environment, affecting the quality of life of residents.

In order to change this situation, the DCI lighting design team was commissioned to carry out a comprehensive lighting renovation of the cathedral. They conducted in-depth research on the history, culture, and architectural style of the cathedral, striving to enhance its nighttime image through a new lighting system while respecting cultural heritage, and achieving energy-saving and emission reduction goals.

The new lighting system of the cathedral follows the following key principles:
1. Respect cultural heritage;
2. Minimize the interference of light on observers and surrounding residences as much as possible;
3. Achieve energy efficiency through the use of advanced light sources and Bluetooth control systems;
4. Dynamic lighting scenes are adjusted according to environmental changes, in coordination with urban rhythm and rest needs;
5. Highlight the architectural features through key lighting and use lighting fixtures with dynamic white light technology.

In order to implement this new lighting system, a complete 3D scan was conducted on the cathedral and surrounding buildings. These data are used to create a detailed 3D model.

Through this project, significant energy efficiency improvements have been achieved compared to previous installations due to the replacement of lighting fixtures and the adoption of a new control system, with energy savings exceeding 80%.

As night falls, the lighting system gradually dims, softens key lighting, and even changes color temperature until it is completely extinguished, waiting for the next sunset.Every day, as if unveiling a gift, we can witness the gradual display of every detail and focal point on the main facade located in Pasiegas Square, creating a unique space for contemplation and enhancing its appeal as a tourist attraction.
